Daryl Schafer – Haines Township Supervisor

Meet Daryl Schafer

Daryl Schafer is a husband and father, married to Deborah since 1997. They have one daughter, Katherine, age 11. Daryl’s family belongs to the State College Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, where Daryl serves as a Deacon. Daryl is a two-term Haines Township Supervisor with experience in Business and Agriculture. Since 2001, Daryl has been an independent broker of group and individual insurance, as well as a Registered Investment Representative. He was appointed the vice-chair of the Republican Party of Centre County in 2009 and elected to that position in 2010. This diversified background provides him with a wealth of valuable experience and perspective that influence his public service.

Agriculture is the #1 industry in Pennsylvania. Daryl’s experience in the industry started with 4-H and the Future Farmers of America where his projects including a purebred sheep enterprise and on-farm work experience. He went on to serve as State Vice- President of the PA FFA Association in high school, earn his Bachelors Degree from Penn State in Agricultural Education, and teach agriculture and general science. Daryl also was employed as the State Executive Secretary of the PA FFA Association. In addition, he worked in the livestock feed industry and was the Executive Director of the PA Christmas Tree Growers Association.

Tourism is Pennsylvania’s #2 industry. Since 1998, Daryl and his wife Deborah have owned and operated Schafer’s Country Cottages in Aaronsburg, PA. The cottages are popular with fishermen, who come for the outstanding trout fishing in nearby creeks. Hunting, hiking, mountain biking, boating, swimming, picnicking, snowmobiling, skiing, and sightseeing can all be enjoyed in the 76th District. As a business member of several county tourism promotion agencies, Daryl has first-hand experience in partnering with these entities to expand tourism in this area. He also knows the hard decisions that these agencies have had to face as their state funding was drastically cut in recent years.

Daryl Schafer has been a local elected official since 2003 and has been re-elected twice earning 96% of the vote in 2009. Serving as the Chairman of the Haines Township Board of Supervisors since January 2004, Daryl has worked to assure that the township operates efficiently, debt free, and within their budget. By developing new personnel policies, the township has attained and retained quality employees that serve the residents well. Although contentious at times, a new zoning, land use, and stormwater management ordinance is in development.

Growing up, Daryl’s family was very active in the local volunteer fire company. Since becoming an elected official in Centre County, Daryl has served on the capital campaign committee of the Penns Valley EMS providing funding to construct their facility in Spring Millls. He is also serving on the Millheim Fire Co. multi-municipal Fire Tax Committee overseeing the expenditure of fire tax revenue for new equipment.
